| Chapter 136 of the General Laws of Massachusetts establishes the observance of Sunday as a common day of rest and certain legal holidays. Certain business, trade, labor or work on those days is prohibited unless said work is exempted from the limitations of the law (section 6) or a work permit is issued in accordance with the law. Suggestion: Review the Exemptions to determine if your type of business, trade or labor may be performed on Sundays and holidays. If so, no permit is required. Review the Holidays to determine on which holidays certain business, trade or labor is prohibited. If permitted, no permit is required. Work PermitsThe
Chief of Police, upon reasonable terms and conditions, may issue a permit for
the performance on Sunday of necessary work or labor which could not be
performed on any other day without serious
suffering, loss, damage or public inconvenience, or which could not be
performed on any other work day without delay to military defense work. The
Chief of Police, with respect to any legal holiday, may grant for any
such holiday any permit which could be
granted for the performance on Sunday
of necessary work or labor, and, in
addition, issue a permit for the performance of work on such holiday when due
to special circumstances relating to manufacturing, serious production
inconvenience will result if such work is not performed on said holiday. In
addition, the Chief may grant a permit for the performance of work on such
holiday by clerical and office personnel in offices which are
corporate offices or branches of interstate manufacturing operations
working in other states on such holiday or in offices connected with
manufacturing plants in the commonwealth whether or not production work is being
carried on therein on such holiday, if inconvenience will result if such work is
not performed on such holiday.
