The learner will be able to
understand the stages of child development from prenatal development through early childhood, describe benefits of studying children and the importance of the early years in a child's development, understand the issues and concerns of parents of children with special needs.

The learner will be able to

Effective Parenting Skills
The learner will be able to
identify the child-rearing skills and the financial resources needed for parenting, describe considerations relevant to becoming a parent (including the various ways of becoming a parent such as foster parenting, adoption, and step-parenting, describe the consequences of teen parenting, evaluate various types of discipline methods parents might use with children of different ages, describe parental practices that encourage literacy in young children, distinguish between punishment and positive discipline and discuss the need for substitute care and options available.

Prenatal Development
The learner will be able to
describe the three stages of prenatal development, describe proper prenatal care and identify types of birth defects, describe how both heredity and the environment influence growth and development, investigate how multiple births occur, identify possible solutions for infertility, discuss the environmental hazards and the unborn baby and list various methods of prenatal testing.

Preparing For Birth
The learner will be able to
list the early signs of pregnancy, explain the importance of medical care and proper nutrition during pregnancy, describe how parents can make decisions and preparations relating to childbirth and a baby's care, describe the individual's responsibility to be a wise and informed consumer, including how to plan a spending and savings plan for a new family, identify resources for manufacturer's recalled baby merchandise.

The Baby's Arrival
The learner will be able to
recognize the way in which labor begins and outline the three stages of labor, describe a newborn's appearance at birth and baby's basic needs and how they are met, describe the usual activities and procedures affecting both newborn and mother during the period following birth.

The Baby's First Year
The learner will be able to

The Preschooler
The learner will be able to
describe the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of the three to five year old, describe school experience appropriate for young children, describe appropriate first aid and Heimlich methods for the preschool child under the supervision of the school nurse, and observe and participate in the daily operations of the Little BIG Kids Nursery School.
