The Principal will make frequent drop-in observations during math instruction. This will be documented in a chart illustrating the number and frequency of drop-ins.

November 2005, January 2006, March 2006, and May 2006.

1.

The Principal will observe the amount of active math instruction time versus math worksheet/drill time.  A chart will be created to display the results.

November 2005, January 2006, March 2006, and May 2006.

2.

November 2005, January 2006, March 2006, and May 2006.

Observe whether a variety of math instructional strategies are being used i.e. differentiated instruction. List strategies used.

3.

Observe whether activities that support the expansion of student’s number sense and critical  thinking are frequently stressed in the lessons.  Chart frequency.

September - June

Create a thirty minute per week block from the void created by the elimination of the health education program.  Target this time for math, especially number sense and critical thinking.  This generates over 18 hours of additional math instruction per year. Documentation will be presented in teaching schedules and lesson plans.

Compare the numbers to those prior to realignment.

1.

September - June

Swap one shorter math block for one longer language arts block in grades 3 and 4.  This will increase the minutes per week that math is being taught in grades 3 and 4. This will be documented through teaching schedules.

2.

Provide students with before school opportunities to do organized math enrichment activities i.e. math packets that students begin to work on independently as they arrive at school.  For example, Number Of The Day and/or Problem Of The Day.  Teachers will log activities of the additional math time.

October - June

3.

In addition to the one night dedicated to math homework, Mapleshade teachers will assign at least 10 minutes of math homework each night with an emphasis on number sense and critical thinking exercises.  This will be documented through samples of lesson plans and student work.
