THE EAST LONGMEADOW CULTURAL AFFAIRS COUNCIL
2002 REPORT
TO
THE BOARD OF SELECTMEN:
The
East Longmeadow Cultural Affairs Council is an organization composed of Town
residents appointed by the Board of Selectmen.
The Council is responsible for distributing Lottery funds allocated by
the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
These funds are used to support programs in the Arts, Humanities and
Interpretive Sciences. In order to
provide substantial amounts for low-income communities, the amount is based
upon population and equalized property values.
In addition, the East Longmeadow Cultural Council is responsible for the
maintenance and use of the Little Red Schoolhouse at Center Hill Park.
The
2002 Massachusetts Cultural Council award came to $2370.00. Due to state budget cuts, no “Matching Funds
Incentive Award” was granted this year.
The council received fourteen grant applications for a total of
$9,075.00. All applications were
reviewed and discussed at length for consideration. Based on community benefit and council guidelines, the following
grants were awarded to individuals and organizations:
East Longmeadow Rotary club Summer
Concert Series
Springfield Symphony Orchestra Music
Matters program for 4th graders
East Longmeadow Homegrown Festival
Gary Landgren Honky Tony Piano Man
program for seniors
Linda Gray Kelley Dramatization
program for seniors
John Michael’s & the Valley Jazz
Ensemble Concert for high school students
East Longmeadow Public Library for
four Cultural Children’s Programs
Mountain View PTO David Parker’s
song, dance & sign program
This
year the Schoolhouse became temporary home for the East Longmeadow Public
Library’s children’s programs under the direction of the children’s librarian,
Cindy MacNaught. Also during the year the Town Master Plan
Committee, the East Longmeadow Historical Society, and the East Longmeadow
Library Trustees held their respective meetings at the Schoolhouse.
The
Council also saw the addition of one new member. The Council is always looking for new members to help with its
many projects. We welcome any resident
who has an interest in the Arts and Humanities to attend one of our meetings
and consider joining our group. Meeting
notices are posted at the Town Hall.
The Council also welcomes local organizations to hold meetings at the
Schoolhouse.
We
thank the Selectmen and the residents of our Town for their continued support
and look forward to another successful and productive year in 2003.
