Library

Welcome to the Mapleshade School Library. All students are urged to visit the library and discover our fiction and nonfiction collections. The library is fully automated and book searches are done by computer on OPAC. OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) will provide the student with the following information:

Status: If the book is “IN” or supply a due date
Call Number: Where the book is located in the library.
     Author
     Title
     Summary

Generally, third graders can take out up to two books, fourth graders, three books and fifth graders, four books. Books are checked out for two weeks at a time with unlimited renewals unless another student submits a request. Students can reserve books of interest and they will be notified in their homeroom when the book is available. There are no fines for overdue books.

The library has purchased 125 new books this school year, 2009-2010, with the money from the two Barnes & Noble fundraisers.  Both fiction and nonfiction books were added to the library.  Nine books were donated by students and several magazine subscriptions were received with funds from the Mapleshade PTO and the Priscilla Nooney Fund.

Mrs. Priscilla Nooney was a reading paraprofessional who worked with many students in different job capacities from 1970 until her retirement in 2005. A collection taken up on her behalf after she passed away has allowed the library to purchase items outside the budget such as a large colorful rug and ottoman to make a comfortable reading corner for students, new books and magazines.

READ ACROSS AMERICA

In conjunction with the Read Across America Program on March 4th, Mapleshade will sponsor a student to student book-a-thon.  Our gathering together as a community to enjoy a Dr. Seuss book in celebration of his birthday reminds us all of the importance of education.  Mapleshade students and staff are encouraged to donate up to three books each.  These books may be either paperback or hardcover, gently read (used but clean) and for student’s grade 1-5 (for example no Twilight series).  Books will be collected at the library from Monday, February 8th to Tuesday, February 23rd.  When the book collection is completed, students will have an opportunity on February 25th and 26th to purchase a “new” book for .25 each, again up to three books.  Any books remaining at the end of the book-a-thon will be available to Birchland Park for the 8th grade fundraiser.

All money raised will be donated to Pennies for Peace to support education and the gift of reading for all children in communities throughout Pakistan and Afghanistan.  Additional information about Pennies for Peace can be found on penniesforpeace.org. On March 4th classrooms will enjoy a Dr Seuss story read to them by a surprise guest and we will finish with the traditional green eggs and ham lunch and a reading of that famous book.  I thank you for your interest and support of the library. For additional information please feel free to call me at the library.
