Television Production –
Grade Eight
The learner will be able to identify the primary operational features of the studio camera and function as a camera operator as part of a production crew. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: cable placement; height adjustment mechanism; operation of the viewfinder, including screen alignment lines; zoom mechanism; focus control; panning and tilting locks; trucking with the dolly; preview monitor option; proper framing; and light reflection.
In addition, the learner will be able to utilize the intercom headset, including channel selection, headset microphone, and volume control.

The learner will be able to serve as a floor director. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: sequencing visuals, adjusting the visual holder, signaling the camera person, following the production on the program monitor, maintaining attention to task; assisting camera people; and providing informational signals to talent.
There is a potential for headset employment.

Equipment Review ELPS
The learner will be able to identify the features of the video switcher and function as the switcher for a studio production. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: understanding of all monitors in the control room; recognizing and differentiating between the program buss, the preview buss and insert buss; understanding, identifying, and utilizing the buttons on each buss; understanding the purpose and function of the slide switch; understanding and operating the “cut” button; understanding and operating the “dsk – black” button; understanding and operating the “effects” buttons; understanding and operating the “pattern” button and its relationship to the available wipes; understanding the concept of “take,” “dissolve,” and “fade,” and “wipe,” and being able to create them on the video switcher; understanding and being able to create borders, colors, and shapes on the screen; and being able to respond to a director’s command in a timely manner.
Use of the headset is likely.

The learner will be able to identify the fundamental features of the audio board and function as an audio engineer for a studio production. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: recognition, setting, and operation of master control; understanding the relationship between inputs in the studio and connectors to the audio board; recognition and knowledge of incoming audio lines and their connections to the audio board; understanding of proper settings for “line in” and “trim” buttons; understanding and operation of the sound meter for each incoming audio line; understanding of how and when to use “mute” feature on each line; understanding and use of slide-switch volume controls for each line; recognition and operation of control room audio monitor volume control; knowledge and operation of all aspects of board-mounted CD player and tape cassette deck; understanding of selection of appropriate microphone types and their operation; and being able to respond to a director’s commands in a timely manner

The learner will be able to identify basic features of the tape deck remote control system and character generator and function as the “Film C/G” person in a studio production. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: capability to differentiate between analog and digital tape formats and decks; recognition and understanding of the “Player A” and “Player B” buttons; ability to find a video source on a tape, as well as queing, starting, stopping, forwarding, and rewinding tape; understanding and use of the “jog shuttle;” capability to locate pages on the character generator and bring them to “title preview;” knowledge of how to create pages in character generator, including fonts, colors, backgrounds, borders, and effects in and out; knowledge of playing and removing character generator pages from the program monitor; and being able to respond to a director’s commands in a timely manner.
Use of the headset is possible.

The learner will be able to deliver copy into a microphone and function as an announcer in a studio production. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: delivery of material into a microphone in a technically proper manner; ability to follow program sequencing on a monitor; ability to deliver copy from a storyboard; ability to deliver copy from a teleprompter; understanding of announcer on-screen techniques; and being able to respond to a director’s commands in a timely manner.
Use of the headset is necessary.

OPTIONAL:
Selected students will be given an opportunity to learn directing skills. In these cases, the learners will co-ordinate the work of all members of the studio crew and function as directors in studio productions. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: understanding of concepts and equipment operations for all other production positions; understanding and delivery of “ready commands” and “commands of execution;” accepting responsibility for the coordination of all crew members on the production staff; understanding and direction from a storyboard; capability to maintain the tempo and flow of a production from beginning to end.
Use of a headset is necessary.

The learners will demonstrate the ability to create a video project in a storyboard format. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: creation of an audio component as a base from which the program will be derived; timing of that audio component and its division into four to ten second “bytes;” creation of a video component to complement the audio, which may be in the form of still visuals, graphics, pre-shot video tape, chroma-screen, live studio, or any combination of those; selection of appropriate transitions; development of the production through rough storyboard to finished storyboard; creation of a title card through computer graphics and/or power point; two brief pieces of film shot outside the studio; and appropriate character generation.

The learners will demonstrate the capability to work cooperatively to present a studio production. The necessary knowledge will include, but not be limited to: the ability to operate knowledgeably each piece of equipment in the production system; the ability to take direction and operate the equipment in a timely fashion in concert with other members of the crew; the ability to subordinate the individual to the good of the production; the ability to maintain studio silence at all appropriate times; the ability to understand and maintain proper organization of materials for studio productions; and respecting the work of others when not actively involved in a studio production.
