NEWS RELEASE:

With the onset of fall, the East Longmeadow Board of Health wishes to advise that the

Town’s leaves composting program will continue at the Knowlton Disposal Area on Somers

Road.  Leaves will not be picked up with the trash collection.

This site has been registered with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental

Protection as a leaf composting area.  This area will accept only leaves from East

Longmeadow residences.  Proof of residency is required before leaves will be accepted at the

area.  If leaves from East Longmeadow residences are brought to the site by other than the

resident, a signed written notice from the East Longmeadow resident from whose property the

leaves originate must be presented before the leaves will be accepted at the area.  Only leaves

may be brought to this composting site.  Access is from the Knowlton Disposal Area access road

adjacent to the Police Station.

Please be advised that the Disposal Area for leaves is open on Wednesdays from 9 A.M.

to 5 P.M. through December 4, 2003, weather permitting, and on Saturdays 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. all

year.  An authorized representative will be on hand during the days and hours indicated to direct

the Townspeople to the special area for leaves disposal.  Containers of leaves (including plastic

bags) brought to the site must be emptied and the containers must be removed from the area.

Also, the Department of Public Works wishes to advise residents that due to increased disposal

costs to the Town, different types of yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, brush) must not be

mixed together.

The Board of Health is grateful to the Board of Public Works for its cooperation in the

operation of this composting site.
