TOWN ANNOUNCES LEAF DISPOSAL PROGRAM

With the onset of the fall season, the East Longmeadow Board of Public Works and the Board of Health wish to advise residents that the Town’s leaf composting program will continue at the Knowlton Transfer Station on Somers Road.  As a reminder, no yard waste (leaves, grass and brush) will be picked up curbside or with regular trash collection.

The Knowlton Transfer Station has been registered with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection as a leaf composting area.  Any resident wishing to use the transfer station for disposal of yard waste must purchase a Resident Permit at the Town Hall offices of the Department of Public Works.  The sticker costs $40.00 and is good for the calendar year that began January 1, 2004.  The transfer station permit also allows residents to dispose of other materials and bulk items as per regulations that were voted upon by the Board of Public Works on April 26, 2004.

Any commercial landscaper who wishes to use the transfer station for leaf and grass disposal only, may do so by registering with the D.P.W. office, submitting a client list and purchasing “pay-as-you-dump” coupons.

Please be advised, that the Knowlton Transfer Station is open for business on Wednesdays, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. through late November (weather permitting) and on Saturdays, 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. year round.  Transfer station attendants will be on hand to direct residents to the special yard waste disposal areas, but are not allowed to remove wastes from residents’ vehicles.  All containers of leaves must be emptied at the site, and no paper bags, plastic bags or trash barrels shall be allowed to be disposed of in the compost piles.  Due to different “end stream” disposal avenues, no brush may be disposed of within leaf or grass piles.  If you have any questions regarding composting or the Knowlton Transfer Station, please call the Department of Public Works at 525-5400, extension 3.
