EMPLOYEE WALKING PROGRAM
Not having any wellness programs established for Town employees, the Selectmen’s Office has announced the start of what they hope to be the beginning of a positive health program for Town Employees – the East Longmeadow Employees Walking Club.
“It has been shown that
walking helps people get fit, loss fat, decrease health risks for cancer, heart
disease, diabetes, stroke, and helps people live longer and with more
vitality,” said Leon Gaumond, Executive Secretary, who has started this program
in cooperation with John Whalen of the East Longmeadow Recreation Department.
This pilot program is open to the first 25 participants who will commit to walk 25 miles over a 30-day period. The walking program will run from September 22nd to October 21st. The Board of Health will provide all participants with progress charts and pedometers to track their miles (compliments of Blue Cross/Blue Shield). There is no charge to participate in the program although participants must be an employee of the Town to participate in this pilot program.
The initial meeting of the East Longmeadow Walking Club will be Monday, September 22nd at 4:15 p.m. in the Selectmen’s Hearing Room in Town Hall. Any employees interested in participating must contact Leon Gaumond, Executive Secretary, at the Board of Health at 413-525-5400x123 to sign up.
