TRASH INFORMATION NIGHT, BARREL AGREEMENTS ANNOUNCED

************************************************************************

The Board of Selectmen announced today that it will hold a Trash and Recycling Information Night on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the East Longmeadow High School.  Please join the Board of Selectmen, Solid Waste Advisory Team, Appropriations Committee, Town Accountant, Central Mass Disposal and Mass DEP for a Trash and Recycling Information Night.  This is an excellent opportunity for residents to learn about the new Waste Reduction program that goes into effect on July 5, 2005.

“The main focus of the evening will be to provide citizens with as much information as possible about the new program.  There are numerous misconceptions in the public about how it all works.  The Board of Selectmen recognizes the need to educate people about how the program will work and how it will benefit the Town.  This information night is part of the overall strategy to reach that goal,” said John Claffey, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen.

Central Mass Disposal, Inc. was chosen by the Selectmen to be the new trash hauler for the Town.  They will begin service on Tuesday, July 5th, 2005.

The Board of Selectmen also announced that they have reached a new agreement with Central Mass regarding containers.  Residents will now be able to use their current containers for the new program.  Residents may put a bag of 35 gallons in size in their current container as part of their weekly pickup.  Any additional trash must be put in specially marked Town trash bags, but those may also be put in the container with the first bag.  The only situations when a 35 gallon container is necessary are if a resident decides to dispose of their trash without putting them in a bag in just the barrel itself, or if they have multiple smaller bags, like typical kitchen bags, and don’t opt to put those in a 35 gallon bag.

“This is a concession on the part of Central Mass Disposal.  Residents have told the Board of Selectmen that they didn’t want to have to buy a new 35 gallon barrel when they already have barrels.  This way, residents can use their existing trash containers.  They can put their first 35 gallon bag in their 45 or 90 gallon container.  Then, if they have additional trash, they put it in the special Town bags and can put all of those in with their one allotted bag.  There is no need to purchase a special 35 gallon barrel as long as they are putting their trash in a 35 gallon bag and the special Town bags,” Claffey stated.

“The Trash and Recycling Information Night will be an important opportunity for residents to learn more about the new program.  The Board encourages all residents to come to learn and ask questions about how we can all make it work,” said Claffey.

The event will also be taped by ELCAT to be rebroadcast in the days after the meeting.
