EAST LONGMEADOW GREEN DAY

The Board of Selectmen today announced that Monday, April 3, 2006, has been officially designated as “East Longmeadow Green Day.”  The Board of Selectmen, the Solid Waste Advisory Team, the School Department and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection will hold an event to recognize this designation and reinforce the School Department’s recycling initiative.  The event will be held on Monday, April 3, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Meadow Brook Elementary School, 607 Parker Street, East Longmeadow, MA.

The Board of Selectmen, the Solid Waste Advisory Team, the School Department and the

Massachusetts DEP have worked together over the past several months to study what steps and resources are needed to help support and enhance a recycling program.  The program will target paper and cardboard waste at all five schools.  Students, custodians, staff and administrators will all participate in the program.

Selectman James Driscoll, Chairman of the Board of Health, said, “The SWAT discovered that students and teachers have been recycling paper all along, but that more barrels and dumpsters are needed at the schools.  Our goal is to complete the circle of successful recycling at home and in the schools.  This is a great learning opportunity and we greatly appreciate all of the hard work that Dr. Costa’s staff- principles, teachers, and custodial workers have done.  This program will result in less trash and more recycling which will continue to benefit the town and the environment.”
