COMPOST BINS AVAILABLE

The Board of Selectmen announces that the Town has compost bins available.  The bins are $23.75, a value of 50% off the regular price.  The discounted bins are made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

Residents interested in obtaining a compost bin must come to the Board of Selectmen’s Office Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.  Payment by check or money order must be made out to “The Town of East Longmeadow.”  Cash payments will also be accepted.  Once payment is made, a receipt will be issued to the purchaser that will then be exchanged for their bin at the Public Works Service building, 130 Somers Road.  A limited number of bins are available and will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis.

The bins are 24 cu. ft. capacity, rodent-resistant, and made in Massachusetts of 100%

post-consumer recycled plastic.  They are adjustable to smaller diameters and feature an interchangeable top and bottom for easy harvesting.

Materials that can be composted include yard waste, fruit and vegetable scraps, tea bags, coffee grounds and egg shells.  Organic materials turn into compost in the bins in about 3 to 6 months.  Compost benefits all plants and can be used to enrich soil, reseed lawns, mulch existing plants and improve potting soil.  For more information on composting visit: www.mass.gov/dep/recycle.
