We had two local elections in 2005.
The April 12th local election showed strong interest in two races
where Angela Thorpe won a seat on the School Committee and Gary DeLisle was
re-elected as Selectman. Voter turnout was favorable with 30% of registered
voters going to the polls. There was a special override election on June 14th
in regards to an override vote for additional town funding. There were three
questions on the ballot. The first question asked for an additional $1,051,500
(level funding budget) and was turned down by a narrow 54% to 46% margin. The
second question requested an additional $1,414,796 (needs budget) and was
turned down by a 61% to 39% margin. The third question was a debt exclusion
asking for a study of a new Council on Aging facility and the construction of
12 new elementary classrooms. This was turned down by a 57% to 43% margin.
Voter turnout was strong as 41% came out to vote.
As we have done in the past, we have
registered eligible students (over 20 in 2005) at the High School prior to the
Annual Town Election. This encourages our younger students to become more
active in the Town's civil affairs.
New voting machines were used for
the first time in 2005 with much success. Also, we permanently changed the
polling location for the entire town to Birchland Park Middle School. This
will save approximately $1,000 per election.
As usual, our election workers'
dedication and efforts is very appreciated by the Town Clerk's office and the
community.
