EAST LONGMEADOW HIGH SCHOOL
2004-2005
The 2005 school year proved successful at East
Longmeadow High School for our students in academics, arts, and co-curricular
activities (clubs and sports).
In academics, every student in the Class of
2005 passed the state's competency determination in MCAS – a noteworthy
achievement. The National Merit Scholarship Program notified seven (7)
students that they earned scores in the upper 5% bracket nationally.
Ninety-four (94) students were recognized on Student Achievement Night with
twenty-seven (27) receiving the President's Award for Education Excellence;
twenty-two (22) receiving the Certificate of Mastery; and fifty-seven (57)
receiving the Adams Scholarship. Moreover nineteen (19) students were
designated 'AP Scholars' for their outstanding performance on AP exams. Our
four (4) academic clubs: As Schools Match Wits reached the championship and was
on the air a record seven times; Debate finished second in the 10-team Valley
league; Math team finished second overall in the 21-team league and competed in
the State competition; and the Science team finished third in their league –
all completed highly successful seasons.
In arts, our music program was formally
recognized as eleven (11) students in Band, Chorus and Jazz Band achieved
Western Mass honors and three (3) were selected All State. In addition to the
six annual concerts, the Music Program performed at numerous community events.
Our Drama Club staged two entertaining productions, 'A Festival of One Acts,'
and 'The Complete Works of William Shakespeare.' The Visual Arts Program had
seventeen (17) students participate in the Congressional Art Competition while
one (1) student received a nomination of All State and two (2) were recognized
for Talented Teens/NIE. And Spartanum, which played before large audiences,
had as its theme 'Field Trip to Japan' and donated funding for scholarships,
backdrops, and our As School Match Wits team.
In athletics, the winter season brought a
Western Mass Champion in Girls Swimming and tournament appearances by Boys
Basketball, Hockey and Girls Skiing. In the spring, league champions abounded
in Boys Track and Softball while Girls Track was PVIAC champion. Tournament
appearances were made by these three teams and Boys Lacrosse and Boys Tennis.
During the fall season, two teams qualified for post-season competition: Boys
and Girls Cross Country.
Moving to clubs, the C.O.P.E. (Council of Peer
Educators) promoted a variety of events such as Alcohol Awareness Week, guest
speakers, Volleyball Tournament and World AIDS Day. Our three Foreign Language
clubs encouraged a wide range of activities. The French Club organized two New
York City field trips and Mardi Gras celebration while the Latin Club visited
Italy during February break and participated in Classics Day and the Spanish
Club involved students in a Halloween celebration, Scrabble Tournament and
Shriner's Hospital cards/community service. Our Key Club, affiliated with the
Kiwanis Club of East Longmeadow, is a service organization in which the
students offer their time and effort to help both the high school and the
community. The activities of the Key Club this year have included
participation in the Crop Walk for the Hungry, sponsorship of the Red Cross
Blood Drive, UNICEF, and the Mental Health Association. The National Honor
Society promoted fundraisers for Tsunami Relief, Rays of Hope walk, and
Springfield Rescue Mission. As always, Student Council was extremely active in
supporting school activities such as class elections, freshman orientation,
Grade 8 Night, Open House, pep rallies, spirit weeks and staff appreciation
breakfast. Finally, Young Politicians Club, focused on debating issues
associated with politics.
Lastly, the East Longmeadow Educational Endowment
funded two grants, one for $10,000 to our Business and Instructional Technology
department for new hardware for the computer lab and the second grant to the
Music Department for 'Composers Collaborative.'
