We had four elections in 2006, two local elections and two state elections. The April 12th local election showed one race on the ballot where Joseph Townshend won a seat on the Board of Selectman. Voter turnout was low as 14% of registered voters went to the polls. There was a special debt exclusion election on June 13th in regards to funding for classroom modulars at the elementary schools. The vote passed 69% to 31% with 13% of voter’s casting votes. The State Primary Election was held on September 19th with 24% of registered voters choosing candidates to be on the ballot for the State Election. The State Election was held on November 7th with a higher than expected 59% of registered voters coming to the polls.

As we have done in the past, we have registered eligible students (over 20 in 2006) at the High School prior to the Annual Town Election. This encourages our younger students to become more active in the Town’s civil affairs.

New voting machines were used for the second year with much success. Set-up and final tape calculations from the machines make it easier for the election workers. Also, we permanently changed the polling location for the entire town to Birchland Park Middle School for the second year. This will save approximately $1,000 per election.

As usual, our election workers’ dedication and efforts is very appreciated by the Town Clerk’s office and the community.
